OMR Sheets used in the IIT Joint Entrance Examination are very different from all the other competitive examinations in India. This is mainly due to the examination patter and the type of questions asked in the IIT Entrance Examination. As opposed to other examinations where there are only simple ABCD type MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions), the IIT JEE has a typical pattern in which it includes various types of MCQ questions like the numerical response, integer type question and the column matching type matrix based questions. It also contains normal looking ABCD type MCQs which have either one or more than one correct choice but the inclusion of Integer type and Matrix type questions makes the IIT JEE sheet looks very different.

These are regular looking ABCD type questions having 4 options of answers given for each question. In most examinations only one choice is correct amongst the given 4 choices. But IIT JEE OMR Sheet is different from others, in this pattern some of the ABC type questions have only one single option correct while the others may have more than one correct choice. IIT JEE examination pattern expects the candidate to fill all the correct choices, only then a question is assumed to be solved correctly and only then the marks are scored.

As obvious by the name, these are a set of multiple questions each with multiple options. This type of structure is required when there is a group of questions to be treated as one question. In such a case, each row of the matrix has 4 or 5 options and there might be 4 to 5 such rows. This type of structure is mostly implemented in case of column matching type questions and where there are multiple questions asked based on passage reading. In matrix type questions there are several types of evaluation and marking criteria. Sometimes the pattern is that each correct row will be given positive marks credit and each incorrect row shall be given negative marks so the net outcome of marks obtained for this question would be total of marks obtained for each row. So if you have answered more rows correctly and some rows incorrectly, you still stand some chances to score positive marks. But sometimes it is expected that the marks would be credited only if all the rows are answered correctly that means the answered matrix is a perfect match to the basic key matrix, only then marks would be allotted. This makes the question very tough because any mistake in any of the subparts of the question would lead to zero result.

Generally, we have seen MCQs where there are some pre-printed options. But in case of Integer type objective questions there are by default several choices because if the answer to a numerical question is a number, then that number is one of the options amongst many numbers. A candidate who is solving the question incorrectly might get a different number as the answer. Thus, in case of integer type numbers the entire number matrices provide a large number of choices. If the answer of a question is expected in single digit, then one column having 10 rows of digits 0 to 9 will offer 10 choices of answer. Similarly, as a different example, if the answer to a numerical question is expected in 2 digits the 2 columns with 10 rows will offer values from 0 -99 and thus they will offer 99 possible answer options for that question.
